Emily K. Harrison: $1,520

Financial aid recipient: Actor and producer Emily K. Harrison is the founder of the now 12-year old, intentionally lower-cased square product theatre. She just completed a controversial turn playing child beauty queen and murder victim JonBenét Ramsey in House of Gold, performed in Ramsey’s hometown of Boulder. Joanne Ostrow of The Denver Post called it “a surreal ride that’s surprisingly effective and even profound at times.” The mission of square product, Harrison says, “is to engage in radical acts of inquiry that leave an audience with just as many questions as answers.” Harrison, also an adjunct theatre professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, leaves next week for a year-long assignment at Brunel University London, where she will teach acting, playwriting and script analysis, while also creating a devised piece with students. In 2011, Harrison was named a Colorado Creative Pathmaker by The Denver Post.

Emily’s story: Abdominal pain sent Emily to the E.R. back in March, for which she was successfully treated. Her insurance paid all but about $600 of the $11,000 bill – or so she thought. Five months later, and just weeks from leaving for London, Emily was hit with a bill for an additional $1,519.75 from the Good Samaritan Medical Center. Turns out her insurance company decided to kick back that $1,519.75 to the hospital as “patient responsibility,” without explanation. Adjunct teachers have very limited income in the summer, and Harrison was given only two weeks to pay the unexpected bill.

How we will help: The Denver Actors Fund board has voted to cover the entire $1,519.75.

A message from Emily: “I’m so grateful to the Denver Actors Fund and each and every person who has donated money, goods or services over the course of the past few years. Theatre is not exactly a lucrative career; we choose it because we love it, and it’s nice to know that when unexpected expenses like this pop up – expenses connected to circumstances beyond our control – there’s support for us that allows us to keep doing what we love.”
