This grateful first-time mother got a less-welcome second blessing in the form of mounting medical bills
About Jessie Oblazny: Jessie Oblazny (formerly Hall) moved to Colorado five years ago after falling in love with Denver while on tour with the Missoula Children’s Theatre. Originally from Niagara Falls, N.Y., she graduated with a BA in Theater from Buffalo State College. Jessie was slated to guest star in last year’s Magic Moments production of “Take the High Road” until COVID shut the world down. Denver-area credits include Perry in Firehouse Theatre’s “Rock of Aging: The Revival” and The Narrator in StageDoor Theatre’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” For Inspire Theater Company in Parker, she has played Tracy in “Hairspray,” Jan in “Grease” and Allana in “The Little Mermaid.” She also played Ragman in the lamented BiTSY Stage’s “The Lass Who Went Out With the Cry of Dawn.” Last fall, Jessie was a featured performer in The Denver Actors’ Fund’s “CAST” fundraiser. (You can watch it here.)
Her medical story: Jessie gave birth to a son in December! But she and her husband, Greg, also incurred $2,871.79 in out-of-pocket medical expenses along the way.
How we have helped: The Denver Actors Fund board of directors reviewed Jessie’s bills and unanimously voted to pay them in full, or $2,871.79.

‘AS IF IT WEREN’T HARD ENOUGH TRYING TO FIGURE OUT PARENTING, NOW WE HAD TO FIGURE OUT PAYING THESE BILLS ON OUR ALREADY TIGHT BUDGET.’
A message from Jessie: “Having a baby for the first time is exciting and terrifying, especially during a global pandemic. There were a few complications during the pregnancy, which landed us in the care of a specialist, and with that came many medical bills. Thankfully, our healthy baby boy was born on December 22. When we brought him home from the hospital we were overwhelmed and overjoyed. But then the bills started rolling in … and they kept coming. As if it weren’t hard enough trying to figure out parenting, now we had to figure out paying these bills on our already tight budget. Each time I saw a new bill come in, I panicked a little more. Until I remembered The Denver Actors Fund. I’d performed at a few fundraisers for DAF, but never did I think I would be the one applying for assistance. My family feels so incredibly blessed by this generous community. During a time of much angst and unknown, this assistance has eased our worries immensely and allowed us to focus on our baby boy. We will forever be grateful for welcoming us into this family of theatre folk and for the kindness of “strangers.” We truly can’t thank you all enough!”

ONGOING: “Quarantine Week by Weak” is a new photographic coffee-table book by Susannah McLeod and her wife, Chloe McLeod, who chronicled their home life during the COVID19 shutdown with a lighthearteded photo series documenting their lives during quarantine. They produced more than 35 sets of humorous photos comparing the beginning of quarantine to later in the “stay-at-home” period. Susannah pulled out her camera and we started to play,” said Chloe McLeod. As popularity for the series grew on Instagram and after a feature in Westword, the couple started exploring options to publish the series as a book to benefit The Denver Actors Fund. To order, visit mcleod9creative.com. This project is generously sponsored by The Albritton Family; Natalie Bowen and Jim Corbett; Dave Dyer; Julie Dyer; and Denise Gentilini and Lynette Prisner.
