Denver Actors Fund helps veteran Colorado Springs actor with prostate-cancer expenses
About David Hastings: Veteran Colorado Springs actor David Hastings, 63, most recently played Mr. Mushnik in TheatreWorks’ 2019 production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” (OnStage Colorado’s April Tooke called him “a convincing villain.”) He played Count Orsini-Rosenberg in TheatreWorks’ 2018 staging of “Amadeus” and Orgon in 2016’s “The Game of Love.” David is part of a big chapter in Colorado Springs theatre lore from 2012, when he took over a leading role in the Fine Arts Center’s “Other Desert Cities” after the previous actor had a heart attack. Other Fine Arts Center credits include “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.” He is also the husband of prominent Colorado Springs actor and director Lynne Hastings.
His medical story: David was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had the gland surgically removed in January 2020. Blood tests then indicated that not all of the cancer was removed, so radiation treatments were ordered for the next year.
How we have helped: David has been hit with more than $4,000 in out-of-pocket bills since his cancer journey began 16 months ago. But The Denver Actors Fund is only legally authorized to pay those bills that have been incurred within the 12 months prior to application. The DAF Board of Directors has voted unanimously to pay 100 percent of David’s medical costs during that period, or $1,067. We have since paid an additional $2,913 to cover his most recent radiation treatments, bringing our overall support for David to $3,980. We are also leaving his case open so that we can continue to consider any associated medical costs that might still be forthcoming.

‘Miscast’ is the major annual fundraiser for The Denver Actors Fund. ONGOING: “Quarantine Week by Weak” is a new photographic coffee-table book by Susannah McLeod and her wife, Chloe McLeod, who chronicled their home life during the COVID19 shutdown with a lighthearteded photo series documenting their lives during quarantine. They produced more than 35 sets of humorous photos comparing the beginning of quarantine to later in the “stay-at-home” period. Susannah pulled out her camera and we started to play,” said Chloe McLeod. As popularity for the series grew on Instagram and after a feature in Westword, the couple started exploring options to publish the series as a book to benefit The Denver Actors Fund.
