Denver Center costume stitcher’s emergency trip to dentist was (literally) like pulling teeth
Financial aid recipient: Robert “Andy” Bruening has been a dresser, stitcher and wardrobe team member with the DCPA Theatre Company since November 2021. He’s done wardrobe for “A Christmas Carol” (2021 and ’22), “In the Upper Room” and “Choir Boy.” He was a stitcher on “Rattlesnake Kate,” “Quixote Nuevo,” “Theater of the Mind,” “The Chinese Lady,” “Much Ado about Nothing” and the most recent “A Christmas Carol.” He is originally from Freeburg, Ill.
Andy’s medical story: In mid-December, Andy began having intense, persistent teeth pain. His dentist ordered an emergency extraction of all four wisdom teeth. After insurance, Andy (who will be working down $78,000 in student loans for a very long time), was billed for $1,406 as his out-of-pocket portion of the bill. Because work in the arts can be by definition intermittent, Andy will not be called in for additional work at the Denver Center until Feb. 27.
How we have helped: The Denver Actors Fund has covered all of Andy’s portion of the bill, or $1,406.
‘I WAS NOT PREPARED TO PAY $1,400, BUT THANKS TO THE TREMENDOUS GENEROSITY OF THE DENVER ACTORS FUND, I DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HOW I’M GOING TO!’
A message from Andy: “I’m so grateful to the Denver Actors Fund for helping me out with my last-minute surgery. I’m extremely humbled and blessed to have been taken such good care of. I was not prepared to pay $1,400, but thanks to their tremendous generosity, I don’t have to worry about how I’m going to. This is truly a valued and appreciated organization and resource for every Colorado-based theater worker!”
(Note: At the Denver Actors Fund, anonymity of aid recipients is presumed and fully protected, unless and until the recipient chooses to have their story told.)
